DU student suspended for ‘religious defamation’

Dhaka University (DU) has suspended Abrar Faiyaz, a student of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) of the 2021-2022 academic session, for six months over allegations of making remarks defaming religion.

Two other students, Mehtajur Rahman and Tasnia Islam, are also under investigation in connection with the same incident. Both of them are from the BBA-30 batch of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA).

The decisions were announced in a notice, signed by DU Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed on Wednesday. According to it, several students from the Department of CSE submitted a written complaint to the Proctor's Office on October 26, accusing Abrar of making offensive comments about religion.

In response, the university formed a three-member committee to investigate the allegation. Based on its findings, the authorities decided to suspend Faiyaz for six months.

Additionally, the Proctor's Office has received another complaint against a student from the Department of Physics for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Sanatan (Hindu) religion."The matter will be investigated, and necessary action will be taken accordingly," the proctor said.
