DU students back to class after 112 days

The students of Dhaka University returned to the classroom on Sunday after a hiatus of 112 days following a student-mass movement against the Sheikh Hasina government in July.

Earlier, class routines and instructions were given at all departments and institutes.

However, as per the announcement of the deans' committee, the classes for the 2023-24 academic year will start on September 30.

Students said it felt good to be back on the campus after a long time.

Earlier in the morning, the university administration observed one minute's silence in memory of the martyrs of the uprising.

DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan, pro-VC (education) Prof Dr Mamun Ahmed, pro-VC (admin) Prof Dr Saima Haque Bidisha, treasurer Prof Dr Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, proctor Prof Saifuddin Ahmad and deans of faculties were present.

Dr Niaz said the decision to start classes was taken after discussing with the matter with teachers and students.

He sought cooperation from all stakeholders, including teachers, students and media workers, in conducting academic activities in a fair, peaceful and effective manner.

"The students are in sort of emotional trauma due to the situation arising from the movement. We're working to address this trauma and conflict between teachers and students."

Later at 10:30 am, the VC visited classrooms of various faculties and spoke to teachers and students.

In a syndicate meeting on September 12, it was decided to start classes from September 22.
