DU students protest against 'inauguration of Ram Temple'

A group of Dhaka University (DU) students protested against the 'demolition of the historic Babri Mosque and the inauguration of a grand temple, Ram Temple, in the flashpoint city of Ayodhya, India, on Monday.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the temple to Hindu God Ram the same day, media reports said. It replaces a 16th-century mosque torn down by Hindu mobs in 1992, sparking riots in which nearly 2,000 people, including majority Muslims died.
According to media reports, many Hindus believe the Babri mosque was built by Muslim attackers on the ruins of a temple where the Hindu God was born. The movement to build the temple helped propel the BJP into political prominence in 1990.
Citing it as fuel for communal riots, DU students held a human chain at the base of the Raju sculpture at Dhaka University.
Ali Ibn Mohammad, a student of Bangla Department of DU, said, "Riots took in 1992 due to communal incitement. People were killed, and communal groups benefited through the communal incitement."
Nusrat Jahan Tonni, also a DU student, said, "Exploiting religious sentiments years ago, when riots were carried out on the Babri mosque, a group was established and came to power by exploiting this religious sentiment."
