Students of Dhaka University (DU) seek proper initiatives of the authorities concerned to overcome the five-month session jam which arose following the 61-day unscheduled closure of the university.
Many of the teachers and students were still concerned about whether the classes would resume or not on October 28 as the detained teachers have not been released so far.
"We make an earnest appeal to the university authorities to take effective steps to overcome the looming session jam after resumption of classes on the scheduled date", Faruque Hossain, a third-year student of Public Administration of DU, said Wednesday.
DU Shamsunnahar Hall student Urmee Akhter expressed the hope that the university would not go on any more unscheduled closure or strike at least during the tenure of the caretaker government.
"Our one and only request to the university authorities is that they would take all possible measures to maintain a congenial atmosphere on the campus after restarting classes", fourth-year student of Economics Nazrul said.
On the other hand, many teachers including an acting dean have already expressed their concern that the upcoming admission process for the first-year honours courses may be hampered as three deans, who are directly involved in admission, are now in jail.
When contacted, DU Vice Chancellor SMA Faiz has expressed the hope that easing of the session jam would be definitely possible if cooperation from all including teachers and students of the university is there. "Resuming classes and release of the jailed teachers are not the same issue but both the matters are important", Faiz said in reply to a query.
Sources said a general meeting of Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) might be held within a day or two to make its stand clear on whether the teachers will attend classes or not without release of their colleagues.
