DU students-teachers platform wants city polls to be rescheduled

'Conscious Students-Teachers' of Dhaka University (DU) on Monday also placed a demand for rescheduling the elections to the Dhaka north and south city corporations due to Saraswati Puja that fails on the election day-January 30.

The platform put forth the demand from a human chain programme, held at the foot of Raju Sculpture on the DU campus.

More than a hundred teachers and students attended the programme.

Assistant Professor of Physics Department of DU Dr Ratan Chandra Gosh said, "On January 30, will we visit polling centers to cast vote or celebrate our festival (Saraswati Puja! Not only at DU, there are many institutions in the country where there will be made arrangement for celebration of the festival."

"The election atmosphere must be disturbed due to simultaneous celebration of Saraswati Puja and for this the date of the elections must be changed," he added.

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal DU unit member secretary Aman Ullan Aman and his followers also expressed solidarity with their demand attending the human chain.

Earlier, on Sunday, Bangladesh Chhatra Oikya Parishad, a platform of students of different religions, raised the same demand.
