Teachers and students of the Theatre and Performance Studies Department at Dhaka University (DU) formed a human chain on the campus, demanding justice for those responsible for the death of Munira Mahjabin Memo, a student of the same department.
The programme was held at the base of Aparajeyo Bangla on Tuesday. In addition to students from the department, teachers from various departments also expressed solidarity with the protest.
Speaking at the event, Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma, chairperson of the department, said, "We stand in solidarity with the students' demands. The department has taken all necessary steps within its capacity and has informed the vice-chancellor and pro-vice-chancellor. The accused teacher, Dr Sudip Chakraborty, has been relieved of departmental duties."
Ania Akter, a student of the department, alleged that a prolonged pattern of mental and personal harassment by a teacher had led to the tragic incident. She called for a fair and impartial investigation into the death, as well as the establishment of a safe and supportive campus environment.
Munira Mahjabin Memo, a student of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, was found dead in her rented flat in Badda.
