Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique stressed on the use of renewable solar energy to overcome the prevailing power crisis in the country.
The DU VC said electrification of all sectors was a must for socio-economic development of the country. He said energy shortage hampered agricultural and industrial production and also the establishment of a knowledge-based society.
He made the observations while addressing a national seminar and a three-day exhibition on 'renewable energy,' jointly organised by Renewable Solar Energy Research Centre (RSERC) and Bangladesh Solar Energy Society (BSES) at the Mukarram Hossain Bhaban on the campus Sunday.
The DU VC appealed to all to use renewable solar power to meet their minimum demand and to keep the information technology active.
"The DU is continuously trying to expand the use of renewable solar energy. The issue of establishing a renewable energy research institute at the university is also on the process," he said.
Other speakers told the seminar that solar energy was being used in over 0.2 million houses across the country at present. Atleast 3000 megawatt of electricity could be generated by 2020 with the concerted effort of all, they opined.
They said 15 per cent of the country's energy demand would be met by renewable solar energy. The power crisis will be largely resolved, if the use of renewable energy is expanded to agricultural and industrial sectors including mills and factories.
BSES General Secretary Saiful Huq, Adviser Muhtasham Hossain and RSERC Director Nim Chandra Bhowmik, among others, spoke at the seminar with BSES President Muhammad Ibrahim in the chair.
