Leaders of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) have laid siege to the Vice-Chancellor (VC)'s administrative building, demanding the renaming of two residential halls of the university.
They also called for administrative action against DU teachers, officers, and staff, who allegedly supported the July massacre.
DUCSU leaders demanded that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall be renamed by 'Shaheed Osman Hadi Hall' and Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Hall be renamed 'Bir Pratik Captain Sitara Parvin Hall.'
The protest began at around 2:30 pm on Sunday, when DUCSU leaders, hall union representatives, and a group of students gathered in front of the administrative building. During the demonstration, they chanted slogans such as 'There will be no place for fascism at DU' and 'Down with Mujibism.'
Speaking to reporters, DUCSU Vice-President Shadik Kayem said the proposal to rename Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall and Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Hall originated directly from the students. There are three other DU structures named after 'symbols of fascism'- -Sheikh Russell Tower, Bangabandhu Tower, and Sultana Kamal Hostel.
"We submitted a memorandum to the university administration demanding the renaming of these three establishments as well," he said.
