Durga Puja, the biggest religious festival of the Hindu community, ended with solemn immersion of Goddess Durga in the capital as elsewhere across the country on Saturday, reports BSS.
The immersion of the images of Goddess Durga took place as the religious rituals came to an end in four days as per "Tithi" (Hindu lunar calendar date) this year instead of the usual five-day celebrations.
Hindus across the country celebrated the Bijoya Dashami amid festivity and enthusiasm by visiting their relatives' homes to share sweetmeat when married Hindu women put "sindoor" (vermilion) on each other's forehead on the occasion.
Hundreds of Hindu devotees thronged on the day the Buriganga river in the capital for emersion of Goddess Durga, the final phase of the festival. Carrying the images of Goddess Durga on their shoulder, devotees went waist-deep into the river water and immersed the mother deity.
Earlier, the Hindu devotees joined a traditional Bijoya Dashami procession from the Dhakeshwari Temple in the capital in the afternoon under the auspicious of Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee.
The procession ended on the bank of the Buriganga after passing through different city streets.
Like Bangladesh, the Hindu community living abroad also celebrated the Durga Puja with due religious fervor and solemnity.
This year Durga Puja was celebrated at 28,458 puja mandaps across the country, including 219 in Dhaka city. The number was 28,000, including 212 in the capital, last year.
The festival began on Tuesday with "Bodhan", "Amontran" and "Adhibas" of Goddess Durga and "Ghatasthapan" on "Shasthi Tithi".
Mahasaptami Puja was offered on Wednesday while Mahastami and Kumari Puja on Thursday.
