Edible oil, potatoes, and onions continue to sell at higher prices while there was a drop in the prices of vegetables and eggs last week.
Stored potatoes are being sold at Tk 75-80 and newly harvested ones at Tk 100-120 a kg at the market.
Volatility at the potato market is attributed to the lower production of advanced varieties and skyrocketing cost of seed potatoes, Junaid Ali, a potato and vegetable trader at Beribadh-Rayerbazar wholesale market in the city, told the FE.
On the other hand, he said, import is also halted due to comparatively higher prices in neighbouring India.
Loose soybean oil is being retailed at Tk 172-174 a litre, and super palm oil at Tk 165-168, marking a hike of Tk 2-3 a litre further in a week and Tk 15 in a month.
Oil prices have been soaring amid lower imports as well as limited release of the product by refiners, Md Jahangir, a wholesaler and distributor at Moulvibazar Market in the city.
He said companies are yet to supply bottled soybean oil which has landed them in big trouble. Some groceries told the FE that bottled soybean oil is completely out of stock.
Prices of local variety of onions remain static at Tk 130-140 a kg while imported ones retail at Tk 110-120.
Broiler chicken prices increase by Tk 10 a kg, retailing at Tk 200-210 a kg on Thursday, while Pakistani chicken prices remain steady at Tk 320-340 a kg.
Winter vegetable prices have further declined as the supply of cauliflower, cabbage, country bean, bottle gourd, coriander, and leafy has risen.
Each of cauliflower or cabbage is priced at Tk 40-50, bottle gourd at Tk 30-50, and country bean sells at Tk 80-100 a kg.
On the other hand, pointed gourd, snake gourd, ridge gourd, and sponge gourd prices has dropped to Tk 55-65 a kg, marking a decline of Tk 10. Brinjal, however, remains static at Tk 70-100 a kg.
Egg prices have seen a reduction of Tk 5-10 a dozen. Brown eggs were selling at Tk 145-155 a dozen last week. Rice, beef, mutton and fish prices have also remained stable maintaining their previous highs.
