Former Dhaka University (DU) Vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Emajuddin Ahmed said Friday the country's education budget should reach 5-6 per cent of the GDP from the present 2.18 per cent, reports UNB.
"There's chaos everywhere in the country's education sector for the shortage of sufficient budget and its proper utilisation as well," he told a discussion on 'Anarchy in Education: Future of Bangladesh' arranged by Shikkha Odhikar Andolan at the National Press Club in the city.
The educationist said it will not be possible to resolve the existing problems of the country's education system until at least 5 per cent of the GDP is spent for the sector.
He said, "Countries like Nepal and Bhutan spend more than Bangladesh for the education sector in terms of GDP."
Describing the question paper leakage as a major setback for the education sector, Prof Emajuddin also deplored admission trade in universities.
Terming the political grouping in education system as an unforgivable crime, he said education sector must be freed from grouping to get rid of the chaotic situation.
Knowledgeable, skilled and innovative teachers are needed to instruct the students to establish a dynamic and developed nation, he observed. Shikkha Odhikar Andolan convener Dr Muhammad Abu Eusuf and former VC of Patuakhali Science and Technology University Dr Abdul Latif Masum also spoke on the occasion.
