Eid home-goers' return trips begin

Eid-ul-Azha holidaymakers started returning to capital Dhaka on Sunday after celebrating the festival with their near and dear ones at their ancestral homes.

All the government and private offices will reopen today (Monday) after the end of the seven-day Eid holiday.

So a significant number of people, especially the working-class ones and government and private job holders, arrived on Sunday to rejoin their workplaces.

While visiting Kamalapur Railway Station on Sunday morning, the FE correspondent saw a large number of passengers arriving at the station from different corners of the country after celebrating the Eid.

"We have safely arrived. There was no trouble during our journey," Md Rizvi, a private service holder who arrived from Rajshahi, told the FE at the railway station.

Another passenger who identified himself as Monir Khan, also a government service holder, told the FE that he along with his family members had reached Kamalapur Railway Station safely from Kishoreganj.

A Bangladesh Railway ( BR) official at Kamalapur Railway Station told the FE that most of the trains had arrived at the station without delay.

He, however, said they were expecting larger volume of passengers will arrive at the station from Monday (today) to Thursday.

Meanwhile, visiting Gabtoli, Mohakhali and Sayedabad bus terminals, the FE correspondent found buses were arriving at the terminals with Eid return passengers.

After getting down from the buses, passengers were seen heading towards their respective destinations either by buses, CNG-run auto-rickshaws or private cars.

However, drivers of different bus routes of north Bengal like Bogura, Rangpur, Rajshahi and Dinajpur said that the pressure of returning passengers will surge during afternoon on Sunday and from Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Drivers of different bus operators at Gabtoli Bus Terminal told the FE that they did not face any traffic congestion during morning on Sunday while returning with passengers to the capital.

A driver who identified himself as Haroon Mia said that he did not face traffic jam on the roads as he had started journey from Bogura at around 7:00 pm and reached Gabtoli Bus Terminal at around 11:30 am on Sunday (May 31).

Md Tuhin, a private service holder, told the FE at Gabtoli Bus Terminal that he had returned to the capital from Pabna by a Selfie Paribahan bus.

He said that he did not face any trouble while returning to the capital.

From Pabna to Dhaka per person bus fare is usually Tk180, but they (passengers) had to pay extra Tk 20 toTk 30.

The conductor and driver of Selfie Paribahan said that they had realised the extra money as the passengers had agreed following their request on the occasion of Eid.

Md Momen Ullah who returned at Mohakhali Bus Terminal from Jamalpur on Sunday morning told the FE that he did not find any difficulties at the time of returning to the capital.

He , however, said that he had faced a little bit trouble during his journey to Jamalpur for celebrating Eid-ul-Azha.

"I safely arrived in the capital. There was no traffic jam on the roads (during morning on Sunday," Md Alauddin, who runs a grocery shop at Fakirapool in the city told the FE at Sayedabad Bus Terminal after his arrival from Feni by a Star Line Paribahan bus.

Meanwhile, a significant number of passengers also arrived at Sadarghat Launch Terminal in the capital on Sunday after celebrating Eid holiday.

"I returned to the capital to rejoin my office," Md Abdul Aziz Biswas, an official of a travel agency in the city, told the FE after his arrival at the launch terminal on Sunday morning from Barishal.

Launch passengers said that they did not face any trouble during their return journey to the capital Dhaka.

The launch operators said that they were expecting arrival of increased number of passengers within the next few days ( from Monday to until Saturday).

Many city-dwellers along with their family members had left the capital to their ancestral homes for celebrating the Eid with their near and dear ones.

On the occasion of Eid -ul- Azha, there was a government holiday from May 26 to May 31.

Besides, to make holidaymakers' Eid journey hassle free, the government also declared May 25 as Eid holiday through an executive order, allowing people to enjoy a seven-day Eid holiday (May 25 to May 31).

The government officials and employees and different private sector offices employees enjoyed a seven-day Eid-ul- Azha holiday this year.

Meanwhile, the capital Dhaka started gradually returning to its usual pace as the Eid-ul-Azha holiday period ended on Sunday.

Visiting different places in the capital on Sunday, the FE correspondent found increased movement of residents and a steady rise in public transport activity across the city roads.

Major roads in the city witnessed a noticeable increase in buses, private cars and other vehicles compared to the previous few days.

The city remained largely quiet until Sunday (May 3) due to the seven-day Eid-ul-Azha holiday.
