FARIDPUR, Aug 05: Eid holidaymakers during their journey back to the capital underwent immense suffering getting stranded in a five-kilometre long tailback that was created at Daulatdia ferry ghat on Wednesday.

The highways witnessed increased traffic flow on the day than normal as common masses started returning to Dhaka to join their respective workplaces after celebrating the Eid-ul-Azha outside.

There were several hundred vehicles waiting on the 5km road at Daulatdia to cross the Padma River by using ferries.

Vehicles were seen standing in long queues on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway and Rajbari-Kushtia Regional Highway from zero point of Daulatdia ferry ghat around 10 am.

The vehicles that remained stuck in the tailback included 100 to 150 buses loaded with passengers and a large number of freight trucks.

In addition, with the passage of time, pressure of private cars and similar types of small vehicles also started to increase.

Meanwhile, disruption to ferry services on the Daulatdia-Paturia route was also reported due to strong current in the Padma.

It takes two times time to cross the river now for the ferry congestion.

Consequently, after the Eid, due to extra pressure of Dhaka-bound vehicles and passengers, ferry movement was disrupted, creating a long tailback at the Daulatdia end.

Passengers and drivers had to suffer acutely for getting stuck in the gridlock for hours.

BIWTC Daulatdia Ghat branch co-manager Mahabub Hossain said 16 small and big ferries are plying on the Daulatdia-Paturia route at present.

There is additional pressure of the Dhaka-bound passengers and vehicles after Eid.

Besides, tailback is being created at the Daulatdia end as ferry movement was disrupted due to strong current.
