Enacting mediation law stressed

Former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in India, Justice Gita Mittal, emphasized the necessity of implementing a distinct mediation law in Bangladesh.
She highlighted that countries like India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka have already established mediation laws to address disputes, while Bangladesh is yet to have such legislation.
During a session at the Supreme Court Mediation Centre, as part of a '40-hour mediation training workshop' organized by the Bangladesh International Mediation Society (BIMS), Justice Gita Mittal underlined the absence of a specific mediation law in Bangladesh.
She noted that although mediation exists within Bangladeshi laws under the framework of arbitration, the country lacks a dedicated mediation law. While various laws in Bangladesh offer opportunities for mediation, she stressed the importance of a separate legislation to grant enforceability and efficacy to mediation practices in settling disputes.
