Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Friday hosted its 23rd bird fair, emphasizing the importance of bird conservation and fostering public awareness about environmental stewardship.

The event was organised by the university's zoology department.

It drew a vibrant crowd of bird enthusiasts, conservationists and nature lovers from across the region.

JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Kamrul Ahsan inaugurated the fair at Zahir Raihan Auditorium ground in the morning.

In his inaugural speech, Dr. Kamrul said, "The bird fair is one of the notable initiatives of JU which brings together people from all backgrounds regardless of religion or caste. I thank all the organizers and participants for making this event a success."

"In the case of entertaining people, infrastructure developments in places like Sajek have displaced various species, as well as small ethnic groups.

"Similarly such development at JU poses a threat to bird habitats," he added.

He urged all university staff to be vigilant in protecting habitats of migratory birds.

This year's bird fair featured several accolades, including the Big Bird Bangladesh Award, Scientific Publication Award, Conservation Media Award, and Special Recognition Award.

The day-long event included a variety of activities such as bird-themed art competition for children, quizzes, book and poster exhibitions, displays of protected bird species, bird-watching sessions, bird identification contests, and insightful discussions on avian conservation.

Since 2001, JU has been hosting this remarkable event to raise awareness and promote bird conservation.
