Students, both in the rural and urban areas, should be offered equal educational opportunities to help them develop and go ahead, said Rokia A Rahman, a former adviser to the caretaker government.
She underscored the need for all modern facilities for the students in rural and remote areas as enjoyed by the urban ones.
Ms Rahman made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at a Divisional Championship of National Debate Competition for underprivileged schools, organised by BRAC, ATN Bangla Debate for Democracy in the city.
Hassan Ahamed Chowdhury Kiron, chairman of the Debate for Democracy, moderated the competition titled, 'Bitorko Bikash'. Brac education programme director Dr Shafiqul Islam, former director general of NAIM Professor Iffat Ara Nargis also spoke on the occasion.
Mr Kiron emphasised the need for a separate allocation in the National Budget to increase educational facilities in rural areas.
"There is a need for imparting training for developing skills of teachers along with the students," he said.
Some 2000 secondary educational institutions with 72,000 students have participated in the largest national debate programme. Bajrajogini JK high school of Dhaka won the semifinal competition by defeating Noor Mia Girls High School of Sylhet. Agran High School of Rajshahi won as finalist by defeating Shahid Nayek Abdul Jabbar Secondary School at the divisional championship programme.
