Ex-army officer jailed for abduction bid

CHITTAGONG, May 25 (UNB): A court here sent on Sunday former an army officer to jail in a case filed for attempting to abduct a businessman posing as Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) personnel.

Metropolitan Magistrate Farid Alam passed the order when police produced Major (retd) Arif Ahmed, 46, before the court after seven days into his arrest.

Arif along with some people, identifying themselves Rab members picked up Golam Rabbani Moon, a businessman, to a private car at Choumuhani area under the city's Double Mooring thana on May 18.

When the victim raised hue and cry, locals rescued the businessman and caught Arif while his cohorts managed to flee.

Later, the mob gave Arif a good thrashing and handed him over to police.

Golam Rabbani Moon filed a case with Double Mooring thana in this connection.
