Ex-Rangpur city mayor Jhantu dies

Former mayor of Rangpur City Corporation Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu died at a hospital in the capital on Sunday afternoon, reports UNB. He was 66.
Jhantu, who was shifted to Dhaka from Rangpur on February 1 after he suffered a stroke, breathed his last around 3:30 am at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), said hospital sources.
Jhantu, also an advisor of Rangpur Awami League, was elected the first mayor of the Rangpur City Corporation on December 20, 2012.
Meanwhile, President Md Abdul Hamid expressed deep shock at the death of Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu.
In a condolence message, President Hamid, who is now undergoing treatment in Singapore, prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family members, President's press secretary Md Joynal Abedin told the news agency over phone from Singapore.
Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina also expressed profound shock at the death of Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu.
In a condolence message, the PM recalled with profound respect the contributions of Jhantu to the development of Rangpur city.
"His death is an irreparable loss to Rangpur as well as the country," she said.
Sheikh Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
