Ex-RBI chief Bimal Jalan arrives in city

Bimal Jalan, former governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the country's central bank and Member of Parliament of India, arrives in Dhaka today (Monday) to attend a function of the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management.
The well-known Indian economist will deliver the seventh Nurul Matin Memorial Lecture on 'Ethics in Banking' at a local hotel Tuesday while the Bangladesh Bank Governor Salehuddin Ahmed will chair the event.
During his tenure as RBI chief Bimal Jalan successfully managed the impact of the East Asian crisis on the economy of India. He also strengthened India's balance of payments, maintained a low inflation environment and promoted wide-ranging reforms in India's financial sector.
