CHITTAGONG, Jan 7: Industrialist and former chairman of the UCBL (United Commercial Banks Ltd) Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury (75) expired on Wednesday morning at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
He was admitted to the hospital on January 3 as his condition deteriorated at the United Hospital in Dhaka. He was suffering from cancer and kidney problems, his family sources said.
Mr Chowdhury left behind his wife, two sons and two daughters. His body is scheduled to be brought to Chittagong by Wednesday night. He was born on June 2, 1940 at Rasulabad village of Satkania upazila of Chittagong.
Mr Chowdhury was three times chairman of the UCBL and director of the FBCCI (Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry) and CCCI (Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry). His widow, Hasina Jafar, is a former elected councillor of Chittagong City Corporation.
President of CCCI Mahbubul Alam has expressed deep shock at the demise of former CCCI director Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury.
In a condolence message on behalf of the directors of CCCI he said that besides being a very successful banker Jafar Ahmed Chowdhury was also a very good social worker as he established a school and college for the poor people at his native village.
