Medical experts and policy analysts laid emphasis Friday on multi-sectoral involvement for improvement of the country's ailing healthcare sector.
Although most of the medical treatments for diseases including diabetes, hypertension and cancer are available in the country, patients' access is very limited and capital based, they said while speaking at a healthcare awareness programme in the capital.
Mother Teresa Memorial Society, HEAL and AKAR jointly organised the discussion to celebrate the World Diabetes Day. Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Bangladesh sponsored the programme.
Chairman of the Centre for Development Research, Bangladesh (CDRB) Dr Mizanur Rahman Shelley presided over the function while Dr Hakim Md Yousuf Harun Bhuiyan addressed it as the chief guest. Dr KMHS Sirajul Haque, Dr Maswoodur Rahman Prince, Dr Shahjada Selim and Dr Arman Reza, among others, spoke at the event.
Dr Selim said only awareness can help reduce risks of fatal diseases like diabetes, hypertension and cancer significantly.
"Over 60 per cent people can avoid such fatal diseases, if they are aware about these from the early stage," he added.
Echoing the same voice, the CDRB chairman also underscored the need for massive campaign against such diseases across the country. "However, it is not only the government's responsibility, rather people from all walks of life should be involved in the movement," he noted.
Dr Sirajul Haque identified lack of policy, guidelines and auditing as the deterrents against development of the most vital sector.
