‘Extortion won't be tolerated during transportion of sacrificial animals’

FE REPORT
The government has taken steps to prevent incidents of extortion on roads during the transportation of sacrificial animals ahead of the Eid-ul- Adha.
"We have taken measures to prevent extortion on roads. If any extortion takes place involving sacrificial animals, it will be dealt with strictly," State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives (LGRD) Mir Shahe Alam told the media after inspecting the progress of development work at the Gabtoli cattle market and the construction of a new access road to the Gabtoli Bus Terminal in the capital on Wednesday.
The state minister said the law enforcement agencies along with all relevant ministries and departments would remain vigilant in this regard. Both cattle markets and the roads used by people travelling to and from Dhaka would remain smooth and hassle-free during the upcoming Eid, he said.
"As you have seen, those incidents (extortion) occurred under different types of governments at different times-unelected governments, unconstitutional administrations, or interim governments," he said while responding to a query about extortion from cattle-laden vehicles and disputes over cattle trucks at markets.
He noted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman personally monitors key issues and provides directives when necessary.
"The Gabtoli market is expected to handle around 100,000 cattle. However, if 130,000 cattle arrive, it will pose a challenge. Traders do not inform us in advance about how many cattle they will bring or buy. We will remain prepared for such situations," he added.
