SIRAJGANJ, Nov 13: The farmers of nine upazilas in Sirajganj district are facing shortage of Irri-Boro seeds.
Sources said farmers have already harvested Aman but they could not procure seeds according to their need due to its shortage and high price.
The farmers could not retain seeds from last year because of incessant rain and recurrent floods. Also, they are not getting adequate seeds from Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC).
The BADC officials say they have not received adequate supply of seeds this season against the high demand and what they got has already been distributed through their selected dealers.
The Sirajganj BADC office also admitted that though the government fixed the price of seeds at Tk 38 per kilogram, some dishonest traders were selling them between Tk 40 and Tk 42 per kilogram in the local markets.
