Ferry services on the Shimulia-Kawrakandi and Daulatdia-Paturia routes in the Padma river resumed after several hours' disruption caused by dense fog on Friday morning, reports UNB.
Sirajul Haque, manager of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Shimulia ghat, said ferry services on the Shimulia-Kawrakandi route remained cut off for about six and a half hours.
They kept suspended ferry services and plying of water vessels from 4:00 am to 10:30 am due to poor visibility caused by dense fog.
Eight ferries with a large number of vehicles and passengers were kept anchored at Shimulia and Kawrakandi ferry terminals.
Some 600 vehicles were kept waiting on both sides of the river for crossing.
However, ferry services resumed around 10:30 am as fog disappeared after the sunrise.
Meanwhile, ferry services on the Daulatdia-Paturia route in the Padma river also remained suspended for about five hours.
Salauddin, manager of BIWTC at Aricha, said ferry services as well as plying of water vessels came to a halt at 5:00 am due to blurred visibility caused by dense fog.
Eight ferries with a large number of vehicles and passengers were kept anchored at Daulatdia and five ferries at Paturia.
Besides, three ferries remained stuck in the middle of the Padma river since 5:00 am.
Passengers suffered as about 500 vehicles were kept waiting on both sides of the river for crossing.
Ferry services on the important route resumed around 11:00 am as fog started disappearing after the sunrise.
BSS from Chittagong adds: Dense fog and cold spell partially paralysed the life in Chittagong and its adjacent areas with massive disruption of air, water and road communications causing untold sufferings to thousands of people.
Jaker Hossain, Secretary of Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) said due to thick fog plying of all kinds of ships in port channel remained suspended since last night to 12 noon today.
The port authority was compelled to impose a ban on movements of as many as eight vessels to and from Chittagong owning to poor visibility.
Nur-e-Alam, Manager of Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport (CSAIA) said dense fog disrupted flight operations at the Airport today. Officials of CSAIA told BSS that operations of domestic and international flights remained suspended until 11am today.
Few domestic flights have either been rescheduled or delayed due to dense fog, airport sources said.
However, flight operation and movement of vessels returned to normalcy around 11 am when the fog started to diminish.
Met Officials said foggy weather will continue for next two to three days along the river basins.
