Fiji has emerged as a long-term potential job market for Bangladeshi migrant workers as Dhaka has started to receive demands from the Oceanian state on a regular basis.
Professionals, skilled and semi-skilled workers have good prospects of going to Fiji with jobs for attractive wages.
Bangladesh has sent manpower under these categories in recent times.
Fiji, an archipelago of more than 300 islands, needs foreign workers for sectors, including construction, service and hospitality.
The population of the country is more than 900,000.
Officials of the Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL) said Fiji could be an important job market where Bangladesh would be able to send workers on a regular basis.
The BOESL has already sent 17 Bangladeshis, including technicians and professionals, recently, and the demand for an estimated 200 workers is under process, said an official familiar with this development.
There is a good demand for foreign workers in Fiji. Bangladesh can send 500 to 1000 workers in a year, according to him.
Fijian employers are willing to hire workers from Bangladesh, so it emerges as a long-term prospective market for Bangladeshi workers.
When asked, the official said Fiji is a new job market for the BOESL that is happy to explore jobs in that country.
To avoid overcharging and unfair practices, he said, Fijian employers prefer to hire workers through the government agency.
Migration will cost each worker about Tk 300,000, including airfare and BOESL's service charge, and the expenses will be borne by an employee.
But the return airfare will be borne by the employer.
Employers will also bear accommodation, medical and transportation costs of workers.
An expected monthly salary for low-skilled workers will be Tk 60,000, and it will be Tk 90,000-200,000 for mid-level workers.
Besides, high-skilled professionals will receive wages based on their job nature.
Job contract will be for two years and it is renewable for all categories.
The employees will also be allowed to apply for permanent residence after six year of their job there.
More than 7,000 Bangladeshis are working in Fiji in various sectors and professions, said Bangladeshis are residing there.
