Finance Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam Saturday stressed the need for checking the growing population as the country's food security has been at stake due to shrinking farmlands, reports UNB.
"We need to check the population growth because we're losing croplands. Therefore, food security is at stake," he told a seminar at NEC auditorium in the city, explaining the negative dimensions of population growth.
Organisation for Population and Poverty Alleviation (OPPA) and Life Science Department of the North South University (NSU) jointly organised the seminar titled "Bangladesh Population: Problems and Prospects" with Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud in the chair.
Pointing out another disadvantage of population growth, the Finance Adviser said it would increase unemployment and create social problems as a consequence.
About the positive side, he mentioned the advantage that a large population provided huge workforce to make products competitive as the readymade garment industry had become competitive in the world market due to low-cost labour.
Former caretaker government adviser Dhiraj Kumar Nath, NSU Vice Chancellor Professor Hafiz G Siddiqui and SMC Managing Director Parveen Rasheed took part in the discussion, while Professor MA Mabud of NSU presented the keynote paper.
