Fire burns garment factory at Tongi

FE Report | July 06, 2014 00:00:00

A fire broke out at a readymade garment factory in Sataish Road area of Tongi on Saturday afternoon, triggering panic exit of workers.

Ismail Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi Police Station, told the FE that the fire originated in FS Sweaters Limited housed on the fourth floor of Chaity Complex around 4:30pm.

"Soon the fire spread to other floors of the building. But, firefighters rushed in and dowsed the flames," he said.

Mr Hossain said cause of the fire and casualty, if any, could not be known immediately. He said there were some cracks seen in the wall of the building and panic spread among the workers after the fire broke out.

Garment workers are a bit edgy against the backdrop of recent grim tragedies in factory fires not far from them.

Md Selim, station officer of Tongi Fire Service and Civil Defence, said that six units from Tongi, Gazipur and Kurmitola fire stations drove in the spot to extinguish the fire.

"The fire was brought under control around 6:30pm," he said.
