Fire guts 300 slum houses in Gazipur

GAZIPUR, Aug 11 (UNB): A devastating fire gutted 300 dwellings at a slum in Tongi thana here Friday midnight leaving five people injured.
Local people said the fire originated at a room at Sonabhan Mazar slum near Tongi Bazar at about 12pm and soon engulfed the adjoining houses.
On information, four fire fighting units from Dhaka's Kurmitola and Tongi rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after two and half-hours of frantic efforts with the help of local people.
Five people were injured when they went to put out the blaze. Of them, two were admitted to Tongi government hospital.
The extent of loss could go up to Tk 1 million local people claimed. The cause of the fire could not be known immediately.
