RAJSHAHI, Nov 4 (UNB): Some eight poor fishermen of Keshobpur Bheripara area of the city are earning their livelihood by catching fish in the Padma River with bare hands.
These poverty-stricken fishermen, who do not have necessary fishing gear, risk their life everyday and dive in mid-Padma to catch fish.
Israfil, one of the group of eight fishermen, said, often they have to return empty handed as the Padma, which once had varieties of delicious freshwater fish in abundance, has become fish-less because of indiscriminate fishing and hunting of fish-fry by unscrupulous fishermen.
"Contamination from release of toxic chemical wastes from the factories built on the river-bank is also rapidly turning this river which was once an abode of fishes into a death-trap," said co-fisherman Harun.
Finding no other alternative to change their fate, these eight fishermen now help the local fire brigade as divers to rescue drowning victims.
