Fishermen to get life jackets from UNHCR

The UNHCR will distribute 1000 life jackets to host community fishermen at risk and improve fishing boat landing point at Samlapur-Teknaf on Tuesday, reports UNB.
Around 1,500 fishermen from Samlapur are involved in fishing and generally work as labourers on 300 fishing boats.
The fishermen and labourers usually go to deep sea for fishing without life jacket and are under high risk of drowning and injury, according to UNHCR.
When they return from the sea, the UNHCR says there is neither safe drinking water nor toilet facilities available for them at the fishing boat landing point.
The distribution will be made under the patronage of the UP Chairman of Baharchora Union and in close cooperation with NGO Forum for Public Health, said a media release on Monday.
The UNHCR project aims to reduce disaster risk of injury and drowning for fishermen and labourers on these fishing boats and ensure safe drinking water and toilet facilities for them in the boat landing area.
