Fixing economy first priority: Dr Yunus

Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday said his government would uphold labour rights following the standards set by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) in order to address concerns of the international investors and the brands that purchase clothing from Bangladesh.
He said this to High Commissioner for Canada in Bangladesh, Lilly Nicholls, who called on the head of the interim government at the State Guest House Jamuna in the city, according to a spokesperson of the CA.
"Our first priority is to fix the economy", he said, urging Canada to invest in Bangladesh in an effort to help rebuild the country from concerning economic issues.
Professor Yunus recalled his long relationships with Canada, including its top politicians and development agencies, saying his government needs Canadian support to boost economic growth. He said his story had been included in the Canadian school textbooks.
"We need big investment," he said, adding the interim government inherited an economy, which was in total mess with a huge amount of debt being accumulated.
He said the government was also restoring vital institutions broken by the previous regime and was "bringing order and clarity in governance." The Canadian High Commissioner said her government was ready to support the Chief Adviser and the interim government of Bangladesh.
