The flag off ceremony on the first expedition from Bangladesh Mountaineer MA Mohit to top of the world Mount Everest was held at Jatiya Press Club Friday, reports BSS.
Renowned Educationists Professor Zillur Rahman Siddiqui, Economist Dr Akbar Ali Khan and Professor Syed Manzurul Islam attended the ceremony as guests of honour.
Founder of Bangla Mountaineering and Trekking Club Enam Ul Haque moderated the function. The Everest Expeditor MA Mohit received the national flag and delivered a speech on his Everest expedition.
Professor Zillur Rahman Siddiqui said it would be an outstanding achievement for Bangladesh if Mohit end his successful expedition to the top of the Mount Everest.
Mentioning Himalayan Mountain as a part of country's history and culture Dr Akbar Ali Khan said mountaineering should be included in our textbooks for future generation.
The 8,850m (29,035ft) high Mount Everest lies on the Nepal-Tibet border. Mountaineer MA Mohit will leave Dhaka for Nepal on April 2 this year and start his 60-day expedition on April 6. Mohit is the only Bangladeshi to conquer 8,201m (26,906ft) Mt Cho Oyu and climb up to seven thousand metre on Mount Manslu.
He had earlier done the basic and advance mountaineering training from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute of India and climbed four Himalayan Peaks over 6,000 metre (Chulu West, Mera Peak, Singu Chuli, and Lobuje Peak).
The three sponsors of the expedition: CEO of Transcom Beverages Ltd GQ Chowdhury, MD and head of Citibank, N.A. Bangladesh Abrar A Anwar and AGM of Akij Cement Company Ltd MM Jasim Uddin also spoke at the function.
