BANDARBAN, July 20 (UNB): Heavy downpour triggered by an onset of monsoon for the last two days has flooded low-lying areas in the hill district.
Low-lying areas of the district town and upazilas were inundated by torrents of rain, leaving many people virtually marooned in the backwoods.
Many dwellings in Armipara, Hafezghona, bus station, Sherebangal Nagar, officers' club, Moiduampara and Memberpara areas in the district town went under 8-10 feet of water. People of these areas took shelter on highlands, including Model Town Primary School, Bus Station Non Government Primary School and Hafezghona Flood Shelter Centre.
Communications of the district with Chittagong and Cox's Bazar snapped Thursday evening as water was flowing up to 4 feet high on Bandarban-Keranihat Road.
Water Development Board (WDB) sources said water level in Shankha and Matamuhuri rivers crossed the danger levels due to the incessant rain.
