RAJSHAHI, Sept 15: Ripe Aush and newly-transplanted Aman paddy on more than 10,000 hectares of land has been inundated by the fresh flood in Mohanpur and Bagmara upazilas of Rajshahi district.
According to sources with the office of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Rajshahi, 6,007 hectares in Mohanpur and 4,095 hectares in Bagmara were used for cultivation of Aush and Aman paddy. But the second spell of flood has almost damaged the newly-transplanted Aman while the farmers somehow managed to reap half the ripe Aush paddy.
However, the farmers are now facing grave shortage of farmlands while the farm labourers are charging exorbitant fees from the farmers and tenants for their work.
On the other hand, in Bagmara about 24 thousand farmers were counting heavy losses by cultivating paddy, vegetables and other crops. Of the 4,095 hectares of land, crops on 3,528 hectares were damaged completely and 567 hectares partially.
