Flood loss in agriculture hits Tk 3.94b in Ctg


Chattogram suffered a loss of Tk 3.94 billion in its agriculture sector due to continuous rain and floods in 15 upazilas of the district, including in the nearby areas of the city, according to Omar Faruk, additional deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Chattogram.
Various crops, including paddy on 1,53,103 hectares of land, have been damaged in Chattogram, with Mirsarai, Fatikchhari, Sitakunda, Lohagara, Satkania, Banshkhali and Chandnaish upazilas suffering significant damage due to the flood water.
As much as the 1,922 hectares of vegetable fields have been submerged in flood water during recent monsoon rain and flood in these areas. Aush and Aman fields have suffered damage, while farmers of the Ropa Aman farmers suffered a loss of over Tk 250 million.
Aman has been cultivated on 102,000 hectares of land in Chattogram district and 43,500 among these have been submerged in flood. Meanwhile, 1,555 hectares of Aman seedbeds have been damaged.
Of the total 33,001 hectares of land in the district, Aush cultivated on 8,383 hectares has been destroyed. Besides, vegetables cultivated on 1,922 hectares of lands and other crops have been damaged.
Officials of the DAE in Chattogram said at least 1,61, 371 farmers have been affected by the flood. Besides, plantations on 13,831,000 hectares of land have been damaged. Among the 15 upazilas in Chattogram, Fatikchhari upazila suffered the most damage amounting to Tk 0.99 billion.
The loss in Mirsarai upazila is Tk 0.48 billion. Besides, Hathazari upazila has suffered a loss of Tk 0.22 billion. Lohagara upazila has suffered a loss of Tk 25.2 million. In Satkania upazila, the loss is Tk 20 million. In Sitakunda, the loss was Tk 17 million.
The DAE officials said that the amount of damage is likely to be increased as the total damage is yet to be calculated. They are inspecting and assessing the damage at the field level.
