August 05, 2008 00:00:00

The flood situation in the districts of Munshiganj, Manikganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Shariatpur and Dhaka's Dohar and Nawabganj upazilas is likely to improve gradually as the Ganges-Padma beats a slow retreat after rising last week, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) reported Monday.

It said, the Ganges-Padma is waning moderately and the declining trend is likely to continue for the next 2-3 days, reports BSS.

At the confluence of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and the Ganges-Padma (the Padma near Goalundo and Bhagyakul) will continue to fall moderately for next 3-4 days, the FFWC report said.

The other major river system, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna continued to decline though at slow pace but is likely to maintain the trend for the next 2-3 days.

The FFWC sources quoting reports from India said, the two rivers are on the fall. The report said, the Ganges at Farakka was maintaining its falling trend.

Similarly, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna at Dhubri, the place before it enters Noonkhawa in Bangladesh too was on the decline.

It fell by 5.48cm Monday, flowing at 25.48 metre at Noonkhawa, well short of its danger level (DL).

The river was also flowing 43cm below its DL at Sirajganj.

But the Kushiyara at Amalshid rose by 10cm, flowing above its DL. The Arial Khan, a distributory of the Padma at Madaripur was 32cm above its DL. The Padma was 30 cm above DL at Goalundo and 40cm above DL at Bhagyakul.
