Food production continues to rise despite pandemic: Minister

The trend of increasing food production in Bangla-desh has continued even during the pandemic, Agriculture Minister Md Abdur Razzak said on Friday, reports UNB.

"In the fiscal year 2020-21, the production of Boro rice has been over 20 million tonnes, which is an all-time high," he said while addressing a press briefing at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) auditorium in the city's Farmgate, marking the World Food Day.

Besides, the minister presented different statistics showing that the overall production of rice, vegetables, wheat, maize, potato and other crops increased significantly compared to the same period in the previous year.

Regarding onion, he said the agriculture ministry has been able to increase its production to 0.7 million tonnes in a single year to achieve self-sufficiency in onion output.

The World Food Day 2021 will be observed today (Saturday) in the country as elsewhere in the world with the theme 'Our actions are our future- Better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life'.

The agriculture ministry will be collaborating with Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations to observe the day in Bangladesh.

An international seminar will be held at Sonargaon Hotel at 10:00 am, marking the day.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to take part in the seminar as the chief guest through videoconferencing from her official Ganabhaban residence.

Besides, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the day.

President Hamid in his message called on the authorities to work on crop diversification, optimum use of arable land, agriculture modernisation, and sustainable use of technology in order to increase crop production in Bangladesh.
