Foreign currencies worth Tk 50m seized at ZIA, passenger held

A man carrying foreign currencies worth around Tk 50 million was held by Customs officials at Zia International Airport (ZIA) Wednesday, Customs sources said.
Mazharul Islam, a Dubai-bound passenger, was challenged by a Customs officer for his suspicious movement during collecting boarding pass.
When interrogated, Mazharul, scheduled to fly by Emirates Airlines, admitted to carrying foreign currencies in his luggage, sources said.
His luggage was brought out of the hold just before take off and currencies of several Middle-Eastern countries amounting to about Tk 50 million were recovered.
In another incident, a cargo officer of ZIA died after a speeding vehicle hit his motorbike from behind near the airport in the morning.
The victim, Abul Kalam Azad, 55, a resident of Kalabagan in city, was riding a motorbike to office when the vehicle hit him at 8:45am.
It could not be confirmed what kind of vehicle hit his motorbike, an officer of Airport police station said.
Azad succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 3:00pm.
