Four international firms, having joint ventures with renowned Japanese firms, are vying for the work of setting up electric and mechanical systems for the capital's metro rail being planned to be set up on Uttara-Motijheel corridor.
Sources said joint venture firms of Italy, Germany, Singapore, India and Korea with tie-ups with Japanese companies like Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Mitsui etc have submitted documents to show their interest as deadline for prequalification bid ended on Monday.
They said under this package, various electricity and mechanical works like setting up of two sub-stations, small stations, overhead 'catenari', automatic fare collection system, lift, escalator etc will be done.
"This is a versatile work for which one company cannot carry out the whole. So joint ventures are expected," said an official.
He said names of the companies could not be confirmed as they are yet to submit all documents.
The prequalification bid for installation of electrical and mechanical systems for the MRT line-6 was opened on March 17 to ensure uninterrupted power supply for the metro rail service.
With this, the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project (DMRTD) under which the MRT line-6 is being implemented has made progress in two component works out of five bids opened since January.
Of these prequalification bids, the rolling stock package is now at the final stage.
Officials said the final selection is now set to get concurrence from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the lone foreign financier of the US$ 2.7 billion project.
Eight companies-Hitachi-Mitsue consortium, Kawasaki-Mitsubishi consortium and Nippon Psych-SC JV of Japan, Norinco Group and Beijing Subway of China, Ansaldo STS of Italy, Alstom of France, and Bombardier of India were short-listed.
The selected company among these will be responsible for supplying 24 sets of trains having six bogies, construction of workshop, setting up of metro rail plant, operation control centre, electrical building, washing plant and training centre.
The MRT line-6 has been planned to be constructed from Uttara to Motijheel with a total of 16 stations with the target to open 10 km (Uttara-Agargaon) service by 2019 and another 10 km (Agargaon-Motijheel) by 2020.
On commissioning, the speedy train on the route will carry 60,000 passengers from one side to another every hour.
