Fresh vax campaign after polls as Covid sub-variant emerges

The yet unvaccinated individuals can take Covid shots after polls as concern arises amid detection of new sub-variants in some countries, including the next-door neighbour India.
The interested persons can also take the 4th shot if they want or suggested by their physicians, according to the health authorities in Dhaka.
"We've adequate stocks of jabs, including the Pfizer's, with an expiry date of February 2025…," Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) director general ABM Khurshid Alam told the FE.
"We've enough vaccines but people have to come to us as an air of indifference prevails among people due to the declining infection trend for months," he added.
"If anyone wants, we can also give the 4th Covid shot," cited Mr Alam, saying that they are encouraging people to take the jab against any possible Covid threat.
"There will be a fresh Covid vaccination campaign after the election and we'll determine a new course of action on the Covid situation," he added.
The government will procure new vaccines upon people's eagerness to take Covid shots and the consumption of the remaining vaccine stocks.
Fresh procurement, however, "will depend on the people's readiness to take Covid shots," added the DG.
According to the official, the infection rate is increasing but still is not carrying worrying signs.
Covid has become a permanent problem for the world, including for Bangladesh.
The new JN.1 sub-variant was detected in countries, including in India. So, it might be found in Bangladesh soon, said renowned virologist Dr Mushtaq Hussain.
He apprehends that Bangladesh is likely to face a higher infection this February "given the trend we have seen in the past years".
There are vaccines in government hospitals, so people should go and get vaccinated, according to Dr Hussain.
He suggested that the authorities run a fresh drive to list the names of those who have not taken any Covid jab yet and ensure their inoculation.
Recently, the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 suggested inoculating people, particularly those medically vulnerable, the fourth shot due to growing detection of the new sub-variant globally.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh on Friday reported 16 new cases with an infection rate of 4.8 per cent. It has been 1.0-2.0 per cent for months.
With the new numbers, the country's total Covid-19 caseload rose to 2,046,383, according to the DGHS.
The official death toll from the disease remained unchanged at 29,477 as no new fatalities were reported during this period.
The daily case test positivity rate stood at 4.8 per cent as 333 samples were tested, said the DGHS.
The recovery and death rates remained unchanged at 98.42 per cent and 1.44 per cent respectively.
