GD filed against Shaon, Mahiya Mahi, Shanta

A general diary (GD) has been filed against actress Meher Afroz Shaon, actress Mahiya Mahi and a writer named Shanta Farjana for their alleged involvement in mocking the July Uprising on social media and insulting its monument.

Shahbag Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman said on Saturday that the Rashtra Sanglap Forum or State Dialogue Forum (SDF) filed the GD on Friday. It was transferred to the Detective Branch's (DB) Cyber Unit for further action.

Police said three leaders of the SDF - Central Member Secretary Anam Ayash, Central Organiser Tuhin Farazi and Chief Coordinator Muhammad Shah Alam Badsha - submitted the written complaint.

It alleged that Shanta Farjana published a video on social media, showing a person throwing shoes at a monument depicting the July Uprising. The SDF described it as an insult to the memory of those associated with the movement.

The organisation also alleged that Meher Afroz Shaon, through video messages and social media posts, portrayed the movement as a planned or staged event and made remarks that were 'derogatory' about the movement and the state.

The SDF further alleged that Mahiya Mahi made social media comments mocking individuals and organisations involved in the July Uprising and compared their activities to acting. The remarks were viewed as 'demeaning' to the movement participants and related organisations.

In the GD, the organisation requested the law-enforcement authorities to investigate the allegations and take legal actions in accordance with the existing laws.

The SDF also called for an investigation into the allegations against the three individuals and sought measures to maintain law and order.
