FE REPORT | September 24, 2021 00:00:00

Goods transporters have threatened to go for a two-day work abstention next week unless their 10-point demand, including carrying out neutral probe into killing of transporters and simplifying driving licence-issuing process, are not met by the authorities concerned by Sunday.

The warning came at a press briefing, organised at the National Press Club on Thursday by a platform under the banner of Bangladesh Truck, Covered Van, Tank Lorry, Prime Mover Owners-Workers Coordination Council.

A leader of the platform, in a written speech at the event, said that they would observe a 48-hour work abstention on September 27-28 to realise their demands.

The 10-point demands of the coordination council or Bangladesh Truck Covered Van Tank Lorry Prime Mover Malik Sramik Samannoy Parishad include withdrawing road-accident cases filed under the Section 302, carrying out neutral and fair investigation into the killing of transport workers, stopping harassment by a section of police personnel in the name of checking papers and removing complications in issuing driving licences.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation or Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation Osman Ali, in his written speech, said if their demands were not fulfilled by September 26 through discussion then they would go for the work-abstention programme from 6:00am on September 27.

He said that the leaders of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Malik Samity, Bangladesh Truck Covered Van Malik Samity, Bangladesh Bus-Truck Owners Association and Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation had jointly formed the Bangladesh Truck Covered Van Tank Lorry Prime Mover Owners Workers Coordination Council on August 21 last to press home their 10-point demand.
