Govt contemplates introducing Hindu marriage registration system

August 13, 2009 00:00:00

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Barrister Shafique Ahmed Wednesday said the government would take initiative to introduce Hindu marriage registration if there be no objection, reports UNB.
The law minister said the Hindu women, failing to show their marriage registrations, have to face legal complexities in different sectors, including overseas visit.
"Mandatory marriage registration system is also there in our neighbouring country India," he said, reaffirming government stand for not enacting any law that can hurt the religious sentiments of anyone.
Law Minister Barrister Shafique unveiled the plan while addressing a seminar titled 'Access to Justice for Victims of Gender-based Violence' at a city hotel.
Women and Children Affairs Ministry organised the seminar, presided over by its secretary Rokeya Sultana. Danish Ambassador Einar Hebogaard Jensen, Project Director Dr Abul Hossain and representatives from different government and non-governmental organisations were present.
The minister also hinted that the government, if necessary, would take initiative for enacting new laws and amending the existing ones in the light of necessary recommendations for protecting women rights and preventing violence against them.
He deplored that women become victim of violence due to social and economic reasons and misinterpretations of religion. "Initiatives have to be taken to identify the reasons behind the violence against women for their solution," he said.
"Repression on women will be reduced if they make themselves economically self-reliant," the minister said, laying importance on taking preventive measures apart from remedial measures for stopping repression on women.
He called upon all to come forward to help make the womenfolk self-reliant.
Shafique also said that the government had constituted a separate Legal Aid Directorate to assist the underprivileged justice-seekers.
The government also planned to activate the district legal aid committees from which the repressed women could get legal assistance apart from access to National Human Rights Commissions, he said.
