Education Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud has said the main responsibility of the government employee is to serve the country's people, reports UNB.

"Government employees should have accountability in all spheres alongside showing their responsibility," he said.

The adviser made the remarks while addressing a programme to distribute certificates among the participants in the 76th Basic Training Course at Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) in Savar.

He asked the government employees to groom themselves in the spirit of patriotism and work for the welfare of the country's people.

"Excellence and sincerity in serving the public will be the key of assessing efficiency and competence of a public servant," he said, adding, "You have to bear the mentality of providing equal service to all citizens without any discrimination over religion, gender and wealth (rich and poor)."

He continued that it must not be forgotten that giving service to the people is not a favour rather they deserve it.

Referring to the new journey started after an unforgettable uprising of the student-people, Wahiduddin Mahmud said this journey is to build a fair, just and equitable humane Bangladesh.

Due to the lack of good governance in the recent past, this path is thorny, he observed.

"As a student of economics, I feel that there is no other way for us to reach the desired destination without well-thought-out and well-planned steps and programmes," pointed the Education Adviser.

He said trained government employees are required for the successful implementation of this massive campaign, adding, "You (government employees) must fulfill the expectations (of the countrymen) that appeared through the immeasurable sacrifices of student-people."
