Govt planning overtime, honorary promotion for police personnel: Home minister

FE REPORT
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the government is mulling to introduce overtime allowances for police personnel for their extended duty hours.
"We are considering introducing overtime allowances for the police personnel engaged in extended duty hours," he said while speaking at a special meeting at the Rajarbag Police Auditorium in the capital on Sunday, marking the Police Week 2026.
The minister noted that the government is also considering allowing police personnel to receive honorary promotion after retirement, as many retire after long service periods, often up to 40 years, without promotional recognition.
"Under the proposed policy, eligible personnel with satisfactory service records may be elevated to honorary ranks after retirement, including assistant sub-inspector (ASI), sub-inspector (SI), and inspector."
The proposed policy may apply across ranks, from constable to Inspector General of Police (IGP), aimed at improving morale and service efficiency.
He further said amendments are being considered to strengthen laws for curbing mob violence and ensuring public order.
Besides, initiatives are underway to modernise police healthcare facilities, including central and divisional hospitals, to ensure improved physical and mental health services for police personnel. Plans are also being considered for further development of advanced medical facilities.
Improving accommodation and constructing new infrastructure for police members has been a government priority, with land acquisition and funding processes being strengthened.
Referring to the current security scenario, the home minister said the law and order situation in the country has shown visible improvement over the past two months. Special operations are ongoing against identified criminals, extortionists, and drug traffickers.
Mr Salahuddin, however, noted that evolving crime patterns, particularly cybercrime and digital offences, require enhanced training and technological capacity of the police force.
Senior police officials, including the IGP, and officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs were present at the event.
