Two zoos in Dhaka and Rangpur will be  modernised further at a cost of Tk 3.50 billion under a five-year project to make them of global standard, reports BSS.
The Department of Architecture of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) conducted a feasibility study on the prevailing condition of the two  zoos .
Dr Maqsudul Hassan Hawlader, deputy curator of the Dhaka Zoo, told the news agency that the implementation of the project is expected to complete by 2017. "The project would  bring about a change in the present animal cage system, which would take a semi-natural shape of the forests," he said.
Mr Hawlader said most zoos in the world have cages with semi-natural look for better animal health and environment, but Dhaka and Rangpur zoos still lack that facility. "It is now a matter of obligation on our part to modernise zoos in Dhaka and Rangpur by providing semi-natural living accommodation along with a favourable environment for the zoo inmates," he said.
Other important aspects of the project include renovation of the sewerage system, construction of underpass, modern digital gates, multi-storied outdoor car parking area and reconstruction of the internal road and streets for the visitors.
New animals would be purchased for both the zoos, the senior zoo official said adding that separate zones would be set up inside the zoos like the tiger zone, lion zone, reptile zone and the monkey zone. This would help the visitors go around specific animal zones of their respective choices, he said.
Meanwhile, the government has asked the BUET's Department of Architecture to implement the project under the master plan, said an official of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. As per the Departmental Project Profile (DPP), the BUET's Department of Architecture will complete the structural design of the zoos under the project, he said.
