The government has taken a move to develop an 87-km-long circular road around the capital for establishing peripheral connectivity to let traffic exit from and enter to the city through different points.

Officials concerned said the proposed circular road has been planned to divert traffic within the city by using different exit and entry points to reach respective destinations.

They further said the circular road will have four lanes with service roads on both sides for slow-moving vehicles, flyovers at important intersections, and underpasses or foot-overpasses and wide medians for further extension of metro-rail.

The entire project will be implemented into two parts - 24 km embankment along with roadway from Demra to Termukh and 63 km road from Termukh to Demra. The circular road will also connect four rivers - Turag, Buriganga, Shitalakhya and Balu - surrounding the capital.

Roads and Highways Department (RHD) has already completed the topographical survey, fixing the alignment - Termukh-Abdullahpur-Dhour-Gabtoli-Babubazar-Sadarghat-Postogola-Chashara-Signboard-Demra-Termukh.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), which will implement the first part of the project, has also selected the consultant.

"We have already prepared Preliminary Development Project Proposal (PDPP), and taken move to select consultant for detailed design and feasibility study," said an official engaged with the project.

He also said BWDB has already appointed consultant for the first part.

The officials said the proposed circular road will help create alternative roads, and will have connectivity with different areas for exit from and enter to the city.

According to PDPP, Termukh will have exit and entry point at Dhaka bypass-Kaliganj-Ghorashal; Abdullahpur with Tongi-Gazipur, Dhour with Ashulia-Baipail-Chandra, Birulia with Birulia-Savar highway, Gabtoli with Dhaka-Aricha highway, Bosila with Keraniganj-Nawabganj highway, Babubazar with Jinjira-Ekuria highway, Fatullah with Fatullah-Munshiganj highway, Signboard with Jatrabari-Kanchpur highway and Demra with Sultana Kamal Bridge-Sylhet highway.

Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges has recently completed revision of Strategic Transport Plan (STP), where three kinds of circular roads - inner, middle and outer - have been proposed to ease traffic movement.

With uncontrolled rise in population of the capital, traffic congestion has become a major concern for the government as well as for the city dwellers.
