Govt urged to protect playgrounds

June 03, 2014 00:00:00

Environment activists urged Monday the government to take immediate steps to protect the existing playgrounds as well as to set up new ones in every locality so that the country's sports sector becomes vibrant in the coming days, reports UNB.

Addressing a seminar, organised by Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) at the National Sports Council (NSC), they noted that there has been no visible steps from the government for conserving the existing playgrounds or for creating new playgrounds despite commitments.

There are many open spaces in Dhaka city which are diminishing due to illegal land development amid lack of legal protection for the playgrounds, they observed.

Demolition of the existing playgrounds, and, on the other hand, lack of steps to set up new playgrounds will lead to the creation of a physically and psychologically feeble new generation, they added.

Moderated by Poba chairman Abu Naser Khan, the seminar was also addressed by its secretary Shamim Khan Tito, footballer of Bangladesh National Team, Amit Khan Shuvra and Peace Karate Foundation president Atik Morshed.
