Govt urged to step up public security as violence escalates


Speakers at a roundtable called on the government to take urgent measures to ensure public safety amid a worsening law and order situation in the capital and across the country.
Referring to the recent shooting of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi in broad daylight and other violent incidents, they said these acts stand as blatant testimony to deteriorating law and order situation.
The roundtable, titled 'Election and Public Security', was organised by the Nagorik Coalition at the CIRDAP auditorium in Dhaka on Sunday. Co-coordinator of Nagorik Coalition Fahim Mashroor moderated the event.
In light of the upcoming national elections scheduled for February 12 next year, the speakers emphasised the importance of enhanced security measures, including the installation of close-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all polling centers.
They also advocated for the provision of body cameras to all security personnel to ensure safety and security and maintain order during the election period.
The speakers stressed the need for political unity and urged all political parties to reach a consensus and jointly commit in public to preventing violence during the election.
They also urged all not to spread false and instigating news on social media.
Journalist and human rights activist Shahidul Alam, human rights activist Irene Khan, BNP leader Mahmuda Habiba, Gono Sanghati Andolon leader Zonayed Saki, Sakib Anwar of Nagorik Oikkya and Rashed Khan of Gono Adhikar Parishad spoke at the event.
