The spending on import of infant formula has come down to Tk 4.0 billion (400 crore) per year with the increasing awareness about breastfeeding in the country.
The country might have to spend a total of Tk 300 billion (30,000 crore) for infant formula import, if mothers did not breastfeed their children.
In Bangladesh, more than 90 per cent mothers breastfeed their children up to two years of age, the press was told.
The disclosures were made by leaders of Bangladesh Breastfeeding Foundation (BBF) at a press conference held in the city Thursday marking the World Breastfeeding Week slated for August 1-7.
The theme of the week this year is: Mother support: Going for the gold.
In cooperation with relevant government agencies, a countrywide programme including workshop, discussion at district and upazila levels, debate and prize distribution among successful breastfeeding mothers has been chalked out to observe the week.
However, the BBF leaders laid emphasis on social support to the mothers breastfeeding their children, so that they can continue the practice.
The infant mortality rate could be reduced significantly by the way of proper breastfeeding.
BBF chairperson SK Roy said in Bangladesh more than 90 per cent mothers breastfeed their children up to two years of age.
